One thing about life, is it keeps changing. As one day moves to another, we slowly move into the next chapter. I stepped out the morning of Ryan and Duygu’s wedding and the crisp air promised that winter was coming. It was the most beautiful, end of fall day. I have two favorite weekends of the fall, and they married on one of them. The trees decided to really show off as Duygu’s family arrived from Turkey to celebrate with her.

St Albans provided the most lovely backdrop. It has always been one of our favorite venues, but it really, really looks incredible in the fall.  Theirs was one of those weddings where halfway into it I already know I have taken too many pictures. It happens. Sometimes, I can’t help myself. Plus, when your wedding day is all at one venue- it’s easy for that to happen! Given that we already had a lovely backdrop to work with kets just say I was elated to have these two as the focal point in front of it. I mean seriously, how stinking cute are they!!???

Have I mentioned I absolutely LOVE when my couples let me do formal pictures outside.

Note: Please do not attempt photographs on railroad tracks. Even most inactive tracks are still owned by the railroad and it is illegal to photograph on most of them.

That said, these tracks are privately owned by St Albans and are completely safe for both my cute couple and myself.

We had soooo much fun at their reception. The dance floor was packed as everyone danced the night away.

I pretty much demanded to be the photographer for Duygu’s siblings whenever they choose to marry.

I (Amy) have always been a firm believer that your attitude will determine your outcome. If you throw a fit about rain on your wedding day, you will have a miserable day. No one wants rain, but it happens sometimes and you have to make the best of it. I don’t know what we do to get the couples we do, but you guys, we have the most stellar human beings as clients. Each of our couples affected by Covid-19 have handled it with such grace. Each one moved to dates I was available for. I can’t begin to tell you what this means to me. I know I often say, “Roll with the Punches” but this was a pretty hard gut punch and we hope to carry the burden with our couples in whatever way we can.

Brooke and Tom, (I shake my head and chuckle as I type) had a gut punch or two. It was a wedding day where their planner, Victoria Burrows, and I were in constant awe of how great Brooke’s attitude was all day long. For starters, it wasn’t lightly raining or steadily raining- It was pouring. Brooke smiled and said, “Lets go make the best of it!”.

But thats not all, a few minutes prior to the ceremony, we noticed our lovely little bride was looking a little… pale. What we thought was jitters turned out to be a pretty rough case of the Stomach Flu. Want to talk about attitude? This girl would disappear to the restroom and minutes later walk out with a smile. I’m telling you- none of the guests had a clue. Brooke would throw a bat signal to her sister (Maid of honor), a nod to Victoria or myself and smile her way to the restroom.

Above all, at the end of the day- their wedding day was lovely. We credit this to their great attitude. They each had a wonderful time because they didn’t focus on the negative. They smiled, they laughed, they cried tears of joy. It was a beautiful day, with wonderful people just as you will see below.

HUGE THANK YOU to my StL community for making the following portraits possible.
Thank you Julia Noack for letting me know about your Secret Rain Spot (I’ll take it to the grave… unless I need it again)
Thank You to Clary Pfeiffer, Kristin Ashley Events and The Four Seasons for giving us permission to bend the rules.
Please also thank your Couple for us, who without their kindness, we would have not been able to do portraits inside.
We are so blessed to be part of the St Louis Wedding Vendor Community.

I was fairly obsessed with the detail of this cake… I may have cried a little when it was cut into. That cake was too pretty to eat!

This might be a wedding you heard about…I know I heard about this couple long before I met them. I first read about Marty and Lauren when I saw their engagement photos shot by my friend Anne Bequette of STJ Creative on their home island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands. It was shortly after the horrible aftermath of Hurricane Irma a little over a year ago (you can check out Anne’s amazing photos from this article in People magazine HERE), and seeing these photos broke my heart. St. John has a special place in our hearts. We have been there twice, and we were just there last year for one of our favorite weddings we have ever done (link for Leah and Andy’s amazing St. John Virgin Island Wedding). In fact, one of the destroyed buildings in Lauren and Marty’s photos is a building that was still standing in Lean and Andy’s photos. It had a strong impact on me.

Earlier this year, Anne was in town and over lunch, she asked me if I would be interested in shooting their wedding with her. Because of the economic devastation to the island and those who live there, she had started the process of helping plan their wedding and gathering people who would be able to work pro bono to help them out. After I heard the fully story of everything they and their families had been through, I knew I wanted to help. Fast forward a few months and I was driving across the country to Ashville, NC to do my little part to help with the day. I was the second shooter for the day, so I got to hang out with the guys in the morning before we headed to the Ridge, which was the venue for the ceremony. It certainly was an all-star crew of people who stepped up to help out (links below), but the main shout outs go to Anne for being the lead for making this happen and to LLG Events for making the day go off without a hitch. Ok, well…there was one hitch (not anyone’s fault…except for possibly being MY fault!). I was driving my rental car to the reception with Anne, Marty, and Lauren when we had a tire blowout on the interstate. Amazingly enough, the rental car did not have a spare tire. So, we had to wait for others from the wedding to show up and take us to the reception! (we had to leave the car on the side of the interstate…serves it right for not having a spare in the trunk!). We eventually made it to the reception at the Venue, and it was decorated amazingly. The floral arrangements were just incredible. The party kicked off, and everyone was free to relax, dance, sing, and let loose to celebrate such an amazing couple.

My part in everything was very small…I was probably the least important person there in a circle of family friends and wedding industry rockstars. But, still…it was such an incredible experience, and I was honored to be a part. And sure, it never hurts to see a few of your photos on the national news. 🙂   Huge congrats Lauren and Marty. I look forward to seeing you two again next time we are on the Island!

It’s always special to me (Joel) when I get to shoot a wedding of someone I know. It is extra special when that person is family. When my cousin Caleb asked if we would be willing to travel to photograph his and Taylor’s wedding, there was absolutely no question. I would have wanted to have been there anyway, but being able to shoot it makes is even more special. Caleb was the only other boy cousin on my dad’s side of the family, so even though we had a substantial age difference, I always thought a lot of him…especially as he got older and started coming into his own in things. So, to say that I was excited to be there is putting it lightly. It made it even better that I would also be able to see the rest of his family (his two sisters and his mom, my aunt). We could not wait.

The wedding was at the Grand Lake Lodge in Grand Lake, Colorado which is right on the edge of the incredible Rocky Mountain National Park. The drive in on its own was incredible, but once we got there…wow. We had not met Taylor before we arrived, but once we did and had the chance to talk with her, we knew she was just as sweet and amazing as we had thought she would be. The next morning when was time for the wedding, everything went as smooth as can be. It always is a lot more relaxing when both the ceremony and reception are in the same place, so there was not much that could go wrong. Of course, weather can always be an issue for an outdoor ceremony, but the day of the wedding was the best weather of all of our days there. There were so many great family moments (which we love even at a regular wedding), and the ceremony was so sweet. It was performed by a friend of theirs, and it was his first ever wedding (which you would never have known because he did great).

After the ceremony and reception, we finally had the chance to do their photos, and that was a blast We always have to play it by ear to see how adventurous a bride wants to be, and Taylor was up for everything (and had the right shoes to climb in to!!). We went to a local water fall and a few other places, and the grandeur of where we were I think speaks for itself in the photos.

We are so excited for you two, Caleb and Taylor. I cannot tell you how honored we were to be there, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for you two for your future. We love you both, and blessings to you both!
