Every wedding has its own unique elements that make it special, but some weddings have just a little bit extra. Usually for me, that has to do with family. Kacey and Matt’s wedding was unique in that it was a joining of families. Matt came into the relationship with four amazing kids, and anytime you have a situation like that, it can go various ways. But it was amazing for us to see how excited they were. Kacey and Matt have been together since 2016, so everyone has already seen each other as family for a long time. But this made it official, and it was amazing to see how much the kids love her (which was especially on display when Matt’s oldest son Jack gave a very moving and loving speech at the start of the reception). It was such a blessing to see. We were thrilled to be a small part, and here are some of our favorites from the day. Huge congrats to Kacey, Matt and the rest of the family!

Kelsey and Brandon!!! This wedding was an absolute blast. Most weddings have a ton of running around…driving from place A to B to C and D and sometimes even more. We were excited, though, because the entire wedding day was happening at the incredible Chase Park Plaza in the central west end of St. Louis. Because of that, it took a lot of stress off, and everyone could just let loose and have a great time. For those that know Kelsey, they know that she is a bit of a fireball. When I asked her in the morning what her level of freaking-out was, it was like a 3 or 4. I (Joel) jokingly told her that was incredible because her being at 3 or 4 is about the lowest level of freaking out she is capable of at any point. We love her, though…he fire and humor kept us laughing all day. And Brandon is definitely the more relaxed of the two, but he and I have a connection in that we are both huge hockey fans…and we wasted no time talking about the Blues. When Louie, the Blues mascot, showed up. Everyone lost it. I can assure you that “Gloria” was sung with great gusto that night.

It truly was a very fun day, and we were so honored to be there. Here are some of our favorites…hope you like them. HUGE CONGRATS TO KELSEY AND BRANDON!!!

First off, let me say that this was an amazing wedding that basically popped off a Pinterest page. This was largely thanks to the mother of the groom, Stacey, who was wedding planner extraordinaire! Jessica and Colby had a vision to be married outside at Colby’s parent’s home. Think Father of the Bride style for those of you old enough to have seen it. There was a gorgeous ceremony spot complete with 2 wooden doors for a double door entrance down the aisle and pews for the guests to sit on…in the yard. Then the tent for the reception was one of the most beautifully decorated spaces I have ever seen. Mad shout out to the amazing team that put all of those details together! Ok, so that is the wow of the location. And while all of those details, décor and beauty are what we often think of and obsess over for a wedding (particularly if you are the bride!), that is not really what made this wedding over the top.

Jessica and Colby have surrounded themselves with an amazing group of friends that they share memories and adventures with and who do life with them. It was incredible to see how much love and support they had from them, along with their incredible families! Not least of all from their adorable little “dog of honor.” The best man was one of our former grooms, Nick (here you can see their Perryville Wedding photos). And we always love it when we get to work with friends of our past couples. Good people know good people, and this was certainly the case here.

Sometimes things just all come together to make a truly magical day. Great people, beautiful surroundings, even the rain decided to quit and not spoil the plans! We were honored to get to be a part of this new chapter for Jessica and Colby and can’t wait to see where life takes them!

Ok, so this wedding was one for the books. Here is a partial list of the adversity Scott and Mel had to overcome in their wedding week:

1) The massive flood closing the campsite where their wedding was going to be.
2) Their wedding transportation bus catching on fire and burning to a crisp, leaving them without their planned transportation
3) The day before the wedding, their tent company telling them that they gave their huge tent (which they had reserved) to someone else and they there were just plain out of luck.
4) Rain…and now without the aforementioned tent.
5) Millions and Millions of bugs…bugs love all the flood water (I probably swallowed at least 20 over the course of the day)

You would think this would lead to a stressful day. And you would be completely wrong. All there was all day long was laughter and joking and fun (interspersed with bug swatting). It was amazing. There are certain weddings that you know will stand out in your memory for years to come. Even though every wedding is unique and has its own special elements, after 250+ weddings, some weddings are set apart from the others. Sometimes that is because of the location, sometimes it’s the people or the events or something else. This wedding can check each one of those boxes. We have shot many weddings at Pere Marquette, but we have never shot (or even knew about) some of the other larger campgrounds that are part of the park. Scott and Mel spend a week at “camp” each year, and they planned it this year to have the wedding at the end of their wedding week. That alone made for a memorable wedding, but really…the best part was the people. So many amazing, fun, and just insane-in-the-best-way people (looking at you especially, bridesmaids) all around, and it’s hard to not jump right into it all with them.

And for Mel and Scott…what an amazing couple. So comfortable with each other and who they are that their joy is infectious. With all the aforementioned chaos that went down right before their wedding, they handled it with such humor and ease. If they would not have told me about all of it, I would never have even realized so many things had gone “wrong.” But when you are with people like this, though, you realize that it’s not about what goes well and what goes off the rails…it’s about celebrating your love, your friends, your family, and how freaking amazing it is to be alive.

Here are some of our favorites from the day. Huge congrats to you both…so thrilled to have been a part of it all!

I’m not crying. You’re crying. If you ask me (Amy) – Everyone should cry. This whole mess about not screwing up makeup makes me absolutely bonkers. Embrace it!! Embrace the tears of joy and cry- and if all else fails, call for more Joy. (Joy Loveless, Makeup Artist, that is). All day, whenever someone cried, we would yell “Joy!!! Where’s Joy”. Everyone felt free to tear up, as long as Joy was around. Nikki and Greg’s wedding day was so full of joy and laughter (and some tears) from all who were present. One of the things Nikki’s parents love about Greg is how much of a genuine family man he is. This family is one who is there for one another and it really shows. We had such a wonderful time with everyone.

According to her mom, Nikki could have gone without a traditional wedding. It was Greg’s love for a celebration with all of their loved ones that made her decide to stay local. It wasn’t at all that she didn’t want to celebrate with their loved ones, it’s that Nikki and a love for being the center of attention don’t go hand in hand. Pretty difficult when you are a girl who lights up the room naturally. I could go on and on- but If I know Nikki, she’s reading this right now thinking “Oh Gosh, what is she going to say next”, so I will stop right here and just let the pictures of this beautiful celebration do the talking.

I never did know what brought this first set of tears on, but Nikki, I hope you never forget.

“I’m not going to cry”

When choosing your bridesmaids, make sure you choose people who make you smile and bring you joy (literally and figuratively).

I loved this little tribute to Nikki’s Greek Heritage. Which reminds me Nikki, Greg’s mom absolutely said that you need to make me some of your famous spanakopita. Word for word. That is EXACTLY what she said. I swear it. True story.

Greg and Nikki… we just had so much fun from the day we met on! I can’t wait to see what your future holds. Just keep holding onto one another and it will all go perfectly! Congratulations to you both!

At Shadow and Light, we absolutely LOVE getting to know our couples. We enjoy seeing their unique personalities shine through. While Pinterest is full of some pretty fantastic ideas (Hello Mudroom Bench I am making Andrew build for me), the wedding photos can often be reflections of someone else’s wedding day rather than your own. Couples everywhere should take note because Derek and Jessica’s wedding day was a true reflection of who they are. Jessica was pretty awesome about another girl stealing her thunder all day long. Derek and Jessica’s sweet niece, Georgia, made sure to leave her mark on everyone’s hearts. I (Amy) tried to stop taking her picture so much but she just went from doing one cute thing to the next!

Jessica MADE all of the jewelry for the moms and bridesmaids. She has her own store you can check out here!

I loved all of the jewelry, Jess but the colors of your mom’s piece just make me so happy! Love!!!   Jessica and Derek chose readings from Boy Meets World and The Wedding Singer.

They were perfect and so very memorable!

Instead of saying “Speak now or forever hold your peace” (Does anyone ever actually say that!?!), their friends were instead asked to speak now about why Jessica and Derek belong together. Each member of the bridal party got their turn.

Instead of sealing with a kiss (they did that too), Jessica and Derek concluded their ceremony with a minty shot of Rumplemintz as a wink to Derek’s mom (it’s her signature drink).

The cutest “Something Old” ever! These Bloomers were Jessica’s when she was little!

Jessica and Derek, we had so much fun with the two of you! It was such a fun day where your personalities were as vibrant as the jewels.

We hope you love your pictures and even more- we hope they always bring you joy!

Some wedding days are massive, extravagant affairs that require an army of people to pull off. I (Joel) have photographed hundreds of weddings like that. They are great for what they are, but the reality is, they are not for everyone. Some people want something smaller…more intimate…more simple. And I absolutely LOVE weddings like that. Amber and AJ decided to have a wedding like that, and I was honored to be there with them for it. There were only 9 people at the ceremony with Amber and AJ…and it was beautiful up on the roof of the awesome Moonrise Hotel. It may have been a short and simple ceremony, but it was no less deep and impactful than any other ceremony three times as long. In some ways, it was even more impactful because you realized that even if there had been 300 people there, the two of them would still have been completely focused on each other. The reception, though? That was a bit more packed! After the ceremony ended, the guests for the reception started showing up in force ready for fun. AJ comes from a very large family, so one highlight was that I photographed the largest single immediate family photo I have ever shot (27 people!! And this was just parents, kids, and spouses!). It was a very sweet and special day, and I am so glad that I could be a small part of it. HUGE CONGRATS to Amber and AJ!!

P.S. Special thanks to my amazing friend Anne Bequette of STJ Creative Photography for telling Amber about me and tag-teaming the day with you. You are incredible! If any of you out there travel to St. Thomas or St. John in the US Virgin Islands, you must check her out!

One our favorite things about weddings is seeing the love a couple has for each other. Every once and awhile you have a couple that is so intensely in love with each other than their excitement about their wedding overflows to everyone else around. A couple that has been working and looking forward to their day with all their hearts. This is Audrey and Austin to the letter. Their love for each other, their families, their friends, and God was undeniable. Everyone who was there could feel it and could not help but be affected by it. I know that we were. Between the tears and the smiles and the hugs and the laughs, the entire place was filled with joy from the floor to the roof.

The wedding was at the fabulous Coronado, which is without a doubt one of the most incredible venues in all of St. Louis. Before we made it there, though, we took the couple to a secluded spot in Forest Park for their romantic first moment of seeing each other on their wedding day. The mixture of intense excitement and some butterflies in the stomach led to such sweet moments between the two of them (and lots of laughter…which made those butterflies fly right away in an instant). We had a blast with them and their wedding party (especially considering the weather was SO much nicer than you would expect for a July wedding!). When it came time for the wedding, the ceremony itself was so very touching. Audrey and Austin’s faith played a massive part in their entire wedding day, and it was the primary element of their wedding, as it should be. Seeing two people who keep God at the center of their relationship gives us so much joy and hope for the amazing future they have in store. They ended the ceremony with worship, and there is no better way than that to seal the marriage ceremony.

After that, the party….and oh boy did they know how to party! The dance floor was jammed from the moment it opened until the end of the last song. I am not sure that Audrey left the dance floor even once! When the songs were over, everyone went outside, fired up some sparklers, and sent the two on their way with some fireworks. It was such a perfect way to end a day like this. Shannon and I (Joel) were so honored to be a part of your celebration, Audrey and Austin, and we wish blessings upon blessings for you two!

P.S. Major shout out to Simcha and her team from Simcha’s Events for her incredible job of planning and running the wedding day. From the planning to designing to execution, it was flawless. If you are looking for a planner, you MUST check her out. You will not be disappointed. Also thanks to Quain from Rockstar DJ’s for always being both an amazing DJ and a great guy. He knows how to keep the party going strong the whole time, and that was on full display. There is a reason he is on our very short list of favorite DJ’s in the StL.

Lindsay and Manish are a wonderful couple with two amazing families that brought together two cultures, traditions, and faiths for an incredible multi-part wedding celebration! We started in Florida at the famous Margaritaville Hotel in Hollywood Beach for an intimate beachside ceremony with family and close friends. Joel and Andrew went down there to capture that special day a few weeks before their St. Louis ceremony.

For their wedding day back home, it was a grand affair kicked off by the Baraat, an Indian ceremony welcoming the groom into the wedding with music and lots and lots of dancing! Manish has got moves! From there we had the beautiful and colorful and lovely ceremony which was at the Marriott Grand St. Louis. After doing some more photos we ended the day at The Caramel Room, one of our absolute favorite spaces.
Some of my favorite moments were the speeches from the Best Man and Maid of Honor. They each had such wonderful, sweet and entertaining things to say about Lindsay and Manish! And for any of you who’ve had that responsibility at a wedding before knows, that isn’t always easy to achieve! It was wonderful to be a part of this unique and special wedding, with two incredible families! Congratulations Lindsay and Manish!

Many times when men think of wedding pictures they equate it right up there with going to the dentist. They think it is either going to be physically painful or just a bit uncomfortable. Until someone works with us, it is usually quite rare for them to think of pictures as having a good time. We were warned that Adam didn’t love the camera prior to them booking us. I smiled. Our team loves a challenge and it is our job to make sure our couples have a great time. We thought we were going to have to work at it, but what we quickly found is that Adam actually did wonderfully in front of the camera. The beauty of wedding images is that we don’t want you to force a smile or fake an image, we want you to look and actually be in love. That was an effortless job for Adam and Natalie. As long as you are comfortable with one another- odds are you will be comfortable in front of the camera. Michelle and Cari, you did a BEAUTIFUL job on their wedding- we love you guys!

Natalie and Adam got ready at the Westin hotel downtown and they would return there for their wedding reception that evening.

Bridesmaid duties never end. Be sure to pack your scissors to fix the bride’s dress at any moment.

Adam. The secret is out. You photograph well my friend, quite well.

Can we just pause to acknowledge how awesome this donut bar was at their wedding?
Nothing better at the end of the night. Not even tacos. Donuts people. Donuts.
